Bank Holidays November 2026: State-Wise List for Diwali Week

Banks in India have up to nine holiday dates in November 2026 depending on your state, but no single day is a nationwide closure. Because Diwali Lakshmi Puja falls on Sunday, 8 November, the weekday bank closures are spread across 9, 10 and 11 November, plus Chhath Puja on 16 November and Guru Nanak Jayanti on 24 November. Below is the full state-wise list from the Reserve Bank of India’s holiday calendar, the weekend closures, and what still works (UPI, NEFT, RTGS, ATMs) when your branch is shut.

Key Takeaways

  • RBI’s November 2026 list has holidays on 9, 10, 11, 13, 16, 20, 23, 24 and 27 November, each applying only in certain cities or states.
  • Diwali itself (8 November) is a Sunday. Second and fourth Saturdays fall on 14 and 28 November, so banks are also shut those days.
  • Guru Nanak Jayanti on Tuesday, 24 November is the most widespread closure, covering 21 RBI centres including New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Hyderabad.
  • Chennai, Guwahati, Kochi, Panaji, Thiruvananthapuram and Vijayawada have no weekday bank holiday in November 2026 under the RBI list.
  • UPI, IMPS, NEFT and RTGS run 24×7, including holidays. Cheque clearing and branch work wait for the next working day.

Updated October 2026. Data below is from the Reserve Bank of India’s holiday matrix for November 2026, checked on 10 October 2026. State governments can add or shift holidays at short notice, so confirm with your branch before a deadline.

How bank holidays are decided

Bank holidays in India are notified under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. The RBI publishes a consolidated list by regional office, based largely on holidays notified by each state government. That is why a festival like Bhai Dooj is a bank holiday in Kolkata and Lucknow but not in Mumbai. The RBI page also marks a separate category called “Banks’ Closing of Accounts”, which applies on 1 April each year, not in November. Because state governments can declare additional holidays at short notice, for example for elections or local events, the list can change during the month.

Bank Holidays by City: Your Diwali Week at a Glance

The biggest planning headache is the Diwali week of 8 to 15 November. Here is how many weekday closures each major centre has in that week, combined with the weekend.

City Weekday holidays, 9-13 Nov Branches shut in Diwali week (8-15 Nov)
New Delhi None 8, 14, 15 (weekend only)
Mumbai 10 8, 10, 14, 15
Ahmedabad 10 8, 10, 14, 15
Bengaluru 10 8, 10, 14, 15
Kolkata 11 8, 11, 14, 15
Lucknow and Kanpur 9, 11 8, 9, 11, 14, 15
Jaipur, Bhopal, Chandigarh 9 8, 9, 14, 15
Gangtok 9, 10, 11 8 to 11, 14, 15
Hyderabad None 8, 14, 15 (weekend only)
Chennai None 8, 14, 15 (weekend only)
Patna None (Chhath on 16 Nov) 8, 14, 15, then 16

Note that Patna and Ranchi have a long run: 14 (second Saturday), 15 (Sunday) and 16 November (Chhath) are all closures. Our Chhath Puja 2026 calendar has the full four-day festival schedule.

Why Diwali Bank Holidays Look Different in 2026

When Diwali falls on a weekday, most states close banks that day. In 2026, the main Lakshmi Puja is on Sunday, 8 November, so the festival’s weekday closures shift to the following days:

  • North and central India (Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chandigarh, and others) mostly close on Monday, 9 November.
  • Maharashtra, Gujarat and Karnataka close on Tuesday, 10 November for Bali Pratipada, Padwa or the Gujarati New Year.
  • West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and parts of the North-East close on Wednesday, 11 November for Bhai Dooj or Bhratridwitiya.

Delhi has no weekday Diwali closure in the RBI list this year. If you are in Delhi and expected a long Diwali bank break, branches will be open on 9, 10 and 11 November.

For the festival dates themselves, see our Diwali 2026 calendar.

What Works When Banks Are Closed

A bank holiday closes branches, not the whole banking system. Here is what you can still do.

Service On bank holidays Notes
UPI Works 24×7 Per-transaction and daily limits set by your bank still apply
IMPS Works 24×7 Instant transfers through net banking or app
NEFT Works 24×7 Available round the clock since December 2019
RTGS Works 24×7 Available round the clock since December 2020; for large-value transfers
NACH (salary, EMI, SIP debits) Runs on all days RBI made NACH available on all days of the week from 1 August 2021
ATMs and cash deposit machines Work, but may run low on cash Withdraw a little extra before a long weekend
Cheque clearing Paused Cheques deposited on a holiday are processed on the next working day
Branch work (locker, DD, KYC updates, loan papers) Not available Plan visits on working days

Practical Tips for Diwali Week Banking

For households

  • Withdraw cash early. Shops, house help and bonus envelopes often need cash during Diwali. ATMs in busy markets can run dry over a long weekend.
  • Check UPI limits. If you plan a large festive purchase, confirm your bank’s daily UPI limit, or use NEFT/RTGS for big amounts.
  • Do not deposit important cheques on a Friday before a closure. They will not clear until the next working day.
  • Visit the locker before Dhanteras if you plan to take out jewellery, since branches are crowded in the days before Diwali.

For small businesses

  • Pay salaries and bonuses early. Many businesses pay before Diwali. Bank transfers work on holidays, but staff may need cash, which needs a branch or ATM.
  • Plan vendor payments around the list. If a supplier banks in a different state, their branch may be closed on a different day from yours.
  • Keep enough UPI/QR capacity. Festive rush can trigger bank-side limits on merchant accounts. Talk to your bank if you expect unusually high volume.
  • Remember GST and tax deadlines do not move for bank holidays unless the government extends them. Pay online in good time.

A worked example: a trader with branches in two states

Take an illustrative textile trader in Surat who buys yarn from a supplier in Kanpur. The Surat side’s branch closes on Tuesday, 10 November; the supplier’s Kanpur branch is shut on Monday, 9 November and Wednesday, 11 November. If the trader posts a cheque on Friday, 6 November, it may not clear until the following week, and the supplier may hold the next dispatch. Sending the payment by NEFT or RTGS on Friday solves the problem, because both systems run on holidays. The same logic applies to any business that pays staff, landlords or vendors in another state.

Stay alert to festive scams

Fraudsters send fake “bank holiday” or “KYC update before Diwali” messages to rush people into clicking links. No bank will ask for your OTP, UPI PIN or full card number by phone or SMS. Our guide to common UPI frauds and how to stay safe lists the tricks that peak during festivals.

Stock market holidays in November 2026

Stock exchanges follow their own holiday list, which is different from the RBI list. According to the NSE trading holidays circular for 2026, the market is closed on Tuesday, 10 November (Diwali Balipratipada) and Tuesday, 24 November (Guru Nanak Jayanti). Diwali Laxmi Pujan on Sunday, 8 November will have a special Muhurat Trading session, with timings to be announced by the exchange.
