Getting covered by Indian media is a different exercise from getting covered in the US or UK. The publication landscape is wider, the regional press matters more than most companies realise, and the trade publications are far easier to reach than anyone expects. This guide covers how a small Indian business actually gets written about.

The four tiers, and which one to aim at

Most companies aim at tier one, get nothing, and conclude PR does not work. The return is almost always better lower down.

TierWhat it isRealistic for a small business?
National business pressThe big financial dailies and business channelsOnly with a genuinely large story — a substantial funding round, an acquisition, a regulatory first
Trade and sector publicationsIndustry-specific titles covering pharma, logistics, textiles, SaaS, F&BYes. Chronically short of stories and read by your actual buyers
Regional and city pressState-level and city papers, including regional language editionsYes, and consistently underrated
Digital and newslettersSector newsletters, startup blogs, YouTube and podcastsYes, and often the fastest to respond

A trade publication covering your sector reaches fewer people than a national daily, but almost all of them are potential customers. That trade-off usually favours the smaller title.

Regional press is the underused route

A company opening a facility, adding jobs or winning a certification in a specific city is a story for that city’s press, and there is far less competition for their attention.

Two things make regional pitches work:

  • Lead with the local angle. Not “we raised funding” but “26 jobs created in Aurangabad”. The job number is the story for a regional desk.
  • Offer the regional-language version. If you can supply the release in Marathi, Tamil or Gujarati alongside English, you have removed work from their day. That alone often decides it.

Build a list of ten, not a database of a thousand

Buying a media list and mass-mailing it is the most common approach and the least effective. It gets your domain filtered, and it is why so many Indian businesses report that “PR does not work”.

Instead: find ten journalists who have written about your specific sector in the last six months. Read two of their pieces. That is the method, and the list stays useful for years.

Where to find them: bylines in the trade publications for your sector, the business desks of your state’s papers, LinkedIn (most Indian business journalists are active there and many list their beat), and X.

The pitch

Short, specific, written for one person. The release is the link underneath, not the email itself.

Subject: Pune grocery supply startup adds 40 tier-2 cities - 8 crore raised

Hi [Name],

You wrote about kirana digitisation in [publication] last month.

We closed Rs 8 crore led by Deccan Capital on 18 March, and are entering
40 tier-2 cities across Maharashtra and Gujarat by March 2027. We currently
serve 2,300 stores and did Rs 34 crore GMV in FY 2025-26.

Happy to share the unit economics behind why we needed 40 cities rather
than four - that is the more interesting story.

[Name, title, phone]

Under 100 words. It proves you read their work, gives checkable numbers, and offers something beyond the release — which is what turns a pitch into a conversation.

Timing for Indian newsrooms

  • Pitch two to four days ahead, under embargo, so there is time to check facts.
  • Tuesday to Thursday, morning IST. Monday is planning, Friday is closing.
  • Avoid the festival weeks and the days around Budget announcements — business desks are fully committed.
  • Follow up once, after three or four days. Then stop.

Paid placement, and being clear about it

Paid articles are widely available in the Indian market and often sold as “guaranteed coverage in [publication]”. Two things to be clear about.

First, it is advertising, not editorial. It can be worth buying for reach, but it does not carry the credibility of a journalist choosing to write about you, and readers can usually tell.

Second, if a provider guarantees coverage in named national publications for a few thousand rupees, either it is paid placement being described as editorial, or it will not happen. Ask directly which it is.

Where distribution fits

Distribution and outreach do different jobs. Distribution publishes your announcement on a permanent, indexed page — the record people find when they search your company, and the link you send in a pitch. Outreach is what produces actual coverage.

Doing one without the other is why both disappoint. Publish the release, then pitch it. Our guide to press release distribution in India covers what each price band delivers.

Frequently asked questions

How does a small Indian business get media coverage?

By pitching trade and regional publications rather than national business press, with a specific local or sector angle and checkable numbers. A list of ten relevant journalists, pitched individually, outperforms a purchased database of a thousand contacts.

Do I need a PR agency in India?

For two or three announcements a year, usually not. Agencies sell relationships, judgement and follow-up time. The relationships take longest to replace, but a focused list of sector journalists is achievable in an afternoon and stays useful for years.

Should I send press releases in regional languages?

If you are targeting regional publications, supplying a translated version alongside the English one measurably improves your chances, because it removes work from the newsroom. Write the English version first and translate it, so figures cannot drift between the two.

Is paid media coverage worth it in India?

It can be, for reach, as long as you know you are buying advertising rather than editorial. What is not worth it is paying for “guaranteed coverage” that is presented as a journalist’s independent decision. Ask any provider directly whether the placement is paid.

How many journalists should I pitch?

Ten who cover your sector, pitched individually with a relevant angle. Mass emails to bought lists produce nothing and can get your domain filtered as spam. Relevance beats volume by a wide margin.

Publish first, then pitch

Have the release published before you pitch, so journalists have something to verify against. Check it against our rejection reasons, model it on our Indian press release samples, then submit it — the free tier costs nothing to try.
