How to Announce a CSR Initiative in India
SHARE

CSR announcements are among the most common releases Indian companies send, and among the easiest to get wrong. The reason is specific to India: for many companies the spending is a legal obligation, not a gesture — and a release that presents a statutory requirement as generosity invites exactly the scrutiny it was meant to avoid.

Know which side of the line you are on

Under Section 135 of the Companies Act, 2013, companies above defined thresholds of net worth, turnover or net profit must spend a prescribed share of their average net profits — two per cent — on CSR activities, and must report that spending. The current thresholds and rules are published by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, and they are worth checking before drafting, because the answer changes the entire tone of the release.

If the spending is mandatedIf it is voluntary
Report it. State what was done and what changed. You may frame it as a choice, because it was one.
Avoid the language of generosity — “giving back”, “proud to donate”Still lead with outcomes, not intent
Name the implementing partner and the districtName them anyway
Expect the obligation to be mentioned in coverageExpect to be asked why this cause

A journalist covering a listed company will know the spending was required. Writing around that fact does not hide it; it just makes the release look like it is hiding something.

Numbers, not adjectives

The failure mode of CSR releases is scale words with nothing behind them: “impacting thousands of lives”, “transforming rural communities”, “empowering women across India”.

EmptyReportable
Impacting thousands of lives across rural IndiaRs 2.4 crore across 14 villages in Nashik district, reaching 3,100 households
Committed to quality educationScience labs in 9 government schools; 1,240 students in classes 8 to 10 have access
Empowering women through skill development612 women completed the tailoring programme; 340 reported income at the six-month follow-up

Note what the third example does: it separates people trained from people earning. That gap is the honest part, and it is the part that makes the rest believable.

What to include

  • Amount in rupees, and the period it covers
  • Exact location — district and state, not “rural India”
  • The implementing partner, named, with its registration status
  • Beneficiaries reached, and how that number was counted
  • The timeframe — is this one year of a multi-year programme?
  • What is measured next, and when you will report it

The implementing partner matters more than companies expect. Most CSR work is delivered through an NGO or a foundation, and naming it lets a journalist verify the programme independently. Refusing to name it reads as though there is nothing to verify.

A worked example

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Vaishnavi Textiles Completes Rs 2.4 Crore Water Programme Across
14 Villages in Nashik District

NASHIK, India — 7 September 2026 — Vaishnavi Textiles has
completed the second year of its watershed programme in Nashik district,
spending Rs 2.4 crore in FY 2025-26 on check dams and borewell recharge
across 14 villages.

The work was implemented with Jal Sahyog Foundation, a registered trust
based in Nashik. A third-party assessment commissioned by the company
recorded groundwater levels 3.1 metres higher at the end of the 2026
monsoon than at the same point in 2024 across nine of the fourteen
villages. Levels in the remaining five were unchanged.

The programme forms part of the company's CSR obligation under Section 135
of the Companies Act, 2013. Vaishnavi Textiles has committed to a third
year and will publish the next assessment in October 2027.

“We built check dams in the first year without asking where the
water was actually going, and five villages saw nothing,” said
Meera Deshpande, Head of Sustainability at Vaishnavi Textiles. “The
second year was mostly correcting that.”

About Vaishnavi Textiles
Vaishnavi Textiles manufactures cotton yarn and fabric for domestic and
export markets. Established in 1998 and headquartered in Nashik, the
company operates three units and employs 1,850 people.

###

Why it works: the amount, district and partner are named. The result is measured by a third party and reported honestly — including the five villages where nothing changed. The statutory obligation is stated plainly rather than hidden. And the quote admits a design mistake, which is the sentence a journalist will use.

The traps

  • Announcing the intention, not the work. “Has pledged Rs 5 crore” is a plan. Announce it again when something has been built.
  • Cheque-handover photographs. Executives holding an oversized cheque is the visual shorthand for CSR that did nothing. Photograph the work.
  • Counting the same beneficiary twice. If 3,100 households received two interventions, that is 3,100 households, not 6,200.
  • Announcing during a controversy. A CSR release published the week an environmental notice lands reads as deflection, and will be covered that way.
  • Claiming a partner’s work as your own. If the NGO ran the programme for eight years before your funding, say so.

Frequently asked questions

Is a CSR initiative worth a press release?

Yes, once there is a completed programme and a measured result. A pledge, a cheque handover or a launch event is not an outcome. The releases that get covered report what was built, where, with whom, and what changed — ideally verified by someone other than the company.

Should the release mention that CSR spending is mandatory?

If it applies to you, yes. Section 135 obligations are public and a journalist covering the company will already know. Stating it plainly costs nothing; omitting it while using the language of generosity is what attracts criticism.

Do I need to name the NGO or implementing partner?

Name them, with their registration status. It is what allows a journalist to verify the programme independently, and it credits the organisation that actually delivered the work. An unnamed partner makes the whole announcement harder to believe.

How do I report beneficiary numbers honestly?

State how the number was counted and over what period, and count each person once regardless of how many interventions they received. Where you have follow-up data, report participation and outcome separately — people trained and people still earning six months later are two different figures.

How long should a CSR press release be?

Around 300 to 400 words. The programme and location, the amount and period, the partner, the measured result, one quote, boilerplate and contact. Length is not what makes these releases credible — verifiable specifics are.
